Pharmacy First Plus
NHS Pharmacy First Plus Service
Expert Care from Independent Prescribing Pharmacists
At Right Medicine Pharmacy, we’re proud to offer the NHS Pharmacy First Plus Service, providing patients with access to highly trained Independent Prescribing Pharmacists for a wider range of common health conditions.
Pharmacy First Plus builds on the existing NHS Pharmacy First Scotland service, allowing qualified prescribing pharmacists to assess, diagnose and, where appropriate, prescribe treatment for certain acute conditions without the need for a GP appointment.
This means faster access to expert care, helping you get the treatment you need closer to home.
Who can use NHS Pharmacy First Scotland?
You can use NHS Pharmacy First Plus Scotland if you are registered with a GP practice in Scotland or you live in Scotland.

What is Pharmacy First Plus?
Pharmacy First Plus is an enhanced NHS service delivered by pharmacists who have completed additional postgraduate training and are qualified as Independent Prescribers. These pharmacists can provide clinical assessments and prescribe a wider range of medicines than those available through the standard Pharmacy First service.
The service helps patients receive timely treatment for common clinical conditions while reducing pressure on GP practices and other NHS services.
Conditions We May Be Able to Help With
Our Independent Prescribing Pharmacists can assess and treat a range of common acute conditions, which may include:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Ear, nose and throat infections
- Respiratory infections
- Skin conditions and infections
- Allergies
- Eye infections
- Other common clinical conditions within the pharmacist’s area of expertise
The conditions that can be treated may vary depending on the qualifications and clinical scope of the prescribing pharmacist available on the day.
How Does the Service Work?
When you visit a Right Medicine Pharmacy with a common health concern:
- Our pharmacy team will discuss your symptoms.
- If your condition requires a higher level of assessment, you may be referred to one of our Independent Prescribing Pharmacists.
- The prescribing pharmacist will carry out a consultation and clinical assessment.
- If appropriate, they can prescribe treatment and provide advice on managing your condition.
- If further investigation or specialist care is required, they will arrange referral to the most appropriate healthcare service.
Do I Need an Appointment?
In many cases, you can speak to our pharmacy team without an appointment.
As demand for the service continues to grow, we may offer scheduled consultations to ensure you receive dedicated time with a prescribing pharmacist. We recommend contacting your local Right Medicine Pharmacy before visiting to check availability as not all Pharmacies offer this service. You can find an easy to use booking option below as well.
