What is menopause?

The menopause is when a woman stops having her periods. Whilst this is a welcome prospect for most women the accompanying hormone changes can sometimes wreak havoc for a while before this happens (perimenopause). And when we say a while that can be anywhere between 2- 10 years. It is usually a naturally occurring process and on average happens around the age of 51. If it take place before 45 we consider this an early menopause and if periods stop before the age of 40 then this is Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI).

However, not all women menopause naturally and a surgical or chemical menopause due to hysterectomy or chemotherapy respectively can plunge some women into this life stage very suddenly. With an increased awareness around hormone health and safer forms of treatment to choose from we are in a better place than ever before to help women understand and manage their symptoms if they need it.
